villa grabar, house and library
Unbuilt
Concord, Massachusetts USA
1976
Designed around the private library of a distinguished professor incorporates study areas for his graduate students and almost incidentally residence for the family. The house is a cube with a second cube rotated 45° within the outer shell. The walls of the outer cube contain the 10,000 volume library and the space between the cubes are the study areas. The central volume within the inner cube serves for both formal gatherings and family dining. Adjacent to the library are two flanking structures for the quotidian functions of everyday life. Entry to the formal structure is through a two-story tall curved screen. All of the structure, inside and out, is of brick built traditionally with arches and clerestory windows, contemporary in execution but reflecting the classical architectural history interests of the owner.
