House on seal cove
Maine, USA
1980
The house is a structurally simple building organized around a strong central axis oriented to the ocean immediately confronting it. As one proceeds along this axis from the land to the sea the building becomes progressively more transparent – windows in horizontal bands are more frequent, larger, more closely spaced. The axis culminates in a two-story triangular bay window commanding a 180° view of the cove and Blue Hill Bay. The entrance level of the house is an entirely self-sufficient dwelling for the owners, the upper floor accommodates summer visitors. The lower level opens directly to the shore as a workshop and boat storage.
Built under severe budget constraints the Spartan finish is entirely compatible with the simple lines and strong geometry of the form. Spaces within are generous and the framing purposely left exposed is of first class craftsmanship.
