HOUSE IN MATTAPOISETT
Massachusetts, USA
1982
For years this site was deemed unbuildable because of the extreme storms that strike the New England coast. The design reflects the effort to mitigate the forces of nature unleashed in these storms but at the same time this is a seashore house with views to the open sea and access to a wonderful swimming beach. The challenge was to celebrate the summer weather and survive the hurricanes. The house is designed with a low profile to huddle under the wind, but elevated so that extreme tidal flooding could pass under the structure and not impact it. Within the house horizontal wind loads are carried by stainless steel cables to shear walls. Most obvious are the exterior storm shutters that cover the triple-hung windows that open that façade to the deck and the beach beyond it. When they are open they form delightful shady shelters from summer breezes. When they are closed they make an impermeable barrier against the fury of hurricanes. The house has withstood five hurricanes since its construction and continues to be a place of joyous family recreation.
