HOUSE ON GREAT CRANBERRY ISLAND
Maine, USA
1985
The site faces the open sea, beaten by weather and intense southern sun, an open meadow bordered by dense forest. The house draws the line between those two environments. Two long pavilions for family and guests the buildings are a series of transverse bearing walls that allow for the long facades to be completely open on one side looking into the dense woods and on the other to the panorama of open ocean. A pair of tall chimneys form a gateway from the forest path to the meadow and the entry of the house. Materials used in boat construction - white cedar sheathing, teak sliding doors, mahogany partitions and casework – are chosen to weather but survive in the exposed environment. Protected decks provide shelter from the wind and are ideal for the owner’s yoga practice.
