HOUSE ON DEER ISLE
Maine, US
1993
Silent and monumental this cluster of pavilions on the rocky shore of Maine, USA, form a vacation retreat; living and dining space, master suite, guest dwelling. Together they triangulate a family enclave paved in granite, grass and furnished with slim firs and birches. There are no other houses within a half a mile and on the coast and the only sounds are the wind and the slow roll of the ocean on the shore. Everything in the house celebrates this austere location and its connection to nature. The major pavilions are contained by massive stone chimneys and large fireplaces, bulwarks against fierce nature, but the other walls are composed entirely of glass that open to and welcome nature. It joins a bold formal concept with a striking natural site and makes of the two, one place.
